Preparing Parents - and Grandparents - for New Car Seat Law

AAA, Child Safety Advocates, Medical Professionals and Police to Provide Detail and Demo

In an effort to ensure that both parents and grandparents are prepared for the new car seat law that goes into effect Oct 1, AAA, child safety advocates, medical professionals and police from across the state will detail and demonstrate the specifics of the expanded protections during a news conference Thursday at the AAA office in Hamden. (details below)

“During this National Child Passenger Safety Week, AAA wants to applaud Connecticut lawmakers for their efforts to better protect children across the state” says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “The changes they have put in place cost parents nothing, but could save lives and reduce injury”.

Connecticut’s stronger child passenger safety seat law now requires children under age 2 to ride rear-facing and older youngsters to remain in booster seats up to their 8th birthday. (The previous law only required rear-facing until 1 and booster seat until 7.)

Among those participating in the news conference will be Rep. Brenda Kupchick (R-132 Fairfield, Southport) and Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria, (R-105), sponsors of the original bill; and representatives from Yale-New Haven Children’s Medical Center and CT Children’s Medical Center (SafeKids CT), Hartford.

During the last legislative session, AAA, along with a broad group of traffic safety stakeholders, testified in favor of  the new law, which now brings Connecticut in line with the latest research and best thinking from leading child safety advocates, both locally and nationwide.  The AAA clubs of Connecticut credit lawmakers for making a strong statement in support of child and traffic safety with the passage of the new law.

Connecticut As a Leader

Connecticut becomes the 8th state nationally - and fifth in 2017 - to accept the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics that advocates children remain in rear-facing car seats up to age two.
The new booster seat provision makes Connecticut the 35th state to follow the recommendation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in keeping children in booster seats up to age 8. Two additional states require up to age 9

AAA also notes virtually all children, who were properly restrained in rear-facing and booster seats under Connecticut’s old law, can remain in that same seat under the new law.

The old law required infants to ride rear-facing up to 1 year and 20 pounds; and in booster seats up to 7 years and 60 pounds.
