AAA’s Top Recommended Experiences in Hawaii

There is so much to do and see in Hawaii, we know that you do not want to miss a thing! AAA has compiled our member’s top choices!

1. Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial
An absolute must-visit destination is Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. This national monument is one of the most recognized icons of World War II and now serves as a place for learning and reflection. Timed entry tickets are free; AAA recommends advance reservations either through a scheduled tour or by going online prior to departing for Hawaii.

2. Enjoy the Pacific Ocean
Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii will invite you to explore its sea and rivers. There are many nautical choices, ranging from kayaking through lush green forests, lounging on the deck of a 60-foot catamaran, or enjoying a sunset dinner cruise aboard a luxury yacht.

3. Voyage to a Volcano
Both dormant and active volcano experiences abound in Hawaii. Tours of active volcanoes on the Big Island include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where guides lead you through the must-see spots and hidden gems of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Preserve. As conditions change daily, your experience is tailored to the current eruptive events. On Maui, bundle up and watch the sun rise over Haleakala’s dormant, moonlike surface, then join the bicycle train down the mountain for an exhilarating morning jaunt.

4. Drive the Road to Hana
If you enjoy the journey as much as the destination, take a drive along the east side of Maui on the Road to Hana. Along the way, you’ll experience twisting roads along sea cliffs, rain forests, and waterfalls. You can swim at the various natural pools along the way; and the journey ends at the hardened black lava volcano remnants, where you’ll have to turn around and go back along the same route (although there is a dirt road across the lava to the island’s west side; some car rental companies require agreements against traveling on it). AAA recommends this trip for adults who enjoy scenic beauty; kids may not enjoy the five-hour ride quite as much.

5. Experience a Polynesian Luau
Enjoy an authentic Polynesian luau. Yes, it may sound touristy, but today’s luau is about high quality cuisine, fascinating culture, and ancient tradition of the Hawaiian people. Bringing people together with music, stories and food is a significant part of Hawaii’s lifestyle. Dining at sunset on a spectacular Hawaiian beach will be memorable for the entire family. Ask your hotel for a recommendation to ensure the right experience for your traveling party.

6. Zip-Line through Hawaii
One of the fastest-growing activities in Hawaii is zip line adventures. Perched above valleys and streams, elevated suspension bridges link to platforms in the trees and thrilling zip lines. Small groups and Carefully trained guides will ensure your safety and comfort.

7. Surf Hawaii
Hawaii offers some of the best opportunities for surfing in the world, so why not take a surf lesson? Spend about two hours reviewing ocean safety, paddle and positioning techniques, advice on how to read the waves, then get actual hands-on water practice. You’ll be standing on your own in no time!

8. Lights, Camera, Action Kauai
On Kauai, take a motorcoach tour of famous movies and TV shows filmed on the island. This guided tour visits more than 15 locations, including famous backdrops from South Pacific, Jurassic Park, Blue Hawaii, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and other movies.

9. The Song of the Humpback Whale
Experience the excitement of the humpback whales as they migrate along the island coast from May to December. Most tours include trained naturalists offering commentary along the way and hydrophones so you can hear the eerily beautiful songs of the whales underwater.

10. Golf Hawaii

There are few places on earth as perfect for golf as Hawaii, with its dramatic topography, ideal growing conditions for lush green fairways and flowering vegetation, and year-round balmy weather. There are more than 80 courses on the six islands, with locations ranging from upcountry rainforests to coral sea cliffs and sandy beaches.
