At LancasterHistory, you can experience the park-like, 12-acre setting of the Campus of History, which includes President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, museum exhibitions of Lancaster County history and artifacts, a research center, a unique museum store, and the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum. LancasterHistory has something to offer every visitor to the Campus of History!
LancasterHistory’s Museum Store sells unique gifts, books, and souvenir items.
Step inside Wheatland, home of James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, and explore the rooms and stairwells where the stories of his political and personal life intersect. The President’s Federal-style mansion and grounds are the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable experience. Original and period furnishings and personal artifacts tell the story of Buchanan, presidential predecessor to Abraham Lincoln, who struggled to calm and unite a divided nation on the brink of civil war. Visitors will experience a guided tour of the mansion accompanied by a costumed, knowledgeable docent.
The West Parlor showcases the fashion and interior décor of the 19th-century, including Buchanan’s teak desk used in the White House.
LancasterHistory is open Monday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Tours of Wheatland are available Monday–Saturday, on the hour, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All operations are closed Sundays, major federal holidays (except Presidents’ Day and Memorial Day) and the first two weeks in January. Please visit LancasterHistory’s website, lancasterhistory.org, for detailed information on planning your visit.
