A new attraction sails into Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, this summer when the tall ship Providence arrives to take up residence at the waterfront. The Providence, which appeared in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, is a full-scale replica of one of the U.S. Continental Navy’s first warships, built in 1768 and captained by John Paul Jones. The ship will offer public tours, educational programs and chartered cruises as well as beer cruises in partnership with Alexandria’s Port City Brewing Company.
Meanwhile, in St. Michaels, Maryland, a new tall ship is on the horizon. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum began design work in January on a new Maryland Dove, a representation of the 1634 trading ship that accompanied the first European settlers to what is now Maryland, where they settled in an area preserved as Historic St. Mary’s City. Visitors to the maritime museum will be able to watch as construction proceeds on the Maryland Dove, which is expected to launch in 2021.
