How Marriage Affects Your Insurance
The average cost of a wedding is nearly $26,000—a significant investment for one of the biggest days of your life. Marriage is a milestone that impacts everything, from your living arrangement to your taxes—and even your insurance coverage.
Here are a few things you may want to consider:
Insure the bling. If you bought an engagement ring, protect it with additional coverage through a floater (a.k.a. rider) that may cover loss or damage.
‘Marry’ insurance policies. Once you’re married, insure your combined personal belongings on a single renter’s or homeowner’s policy. You could also benefit from shifting to a single auto insurance policy, which could earn you a multi-vehicle discount. Also review your policy limits to ensure you have the right amount of coverage.
Bundle up. Buying your homeowner’s and auto insurance from the same company could save you money. Consider getting a quote for a “bundled” policy.
Look at life insurance. If it would be difficult for your spouse financially if something happened to you, consider life insurance to protect your spouse. If you and your spouse already have life insurance policies, now is the time to review or update your beneficiaries.
