Did you know that 15 million people drink water from the Delaware River? That’s 5 percent of the U.S. population! Or that the Delaware River Watershed impacts four states (looking at you New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware)? In our newest exhibit, “River Alive!,” visitors will learn facts such as these through hands-on activities such as our high-tech River Continuum Wall, Water Cycle Puzzle and more!

Step back in time to explore the pivotal role Philadelphia played in the founding of the U.S. Navy in “Patriots & Pirates.” This exhibit allows guests to examine curated objects that have never, or rarely, been seen by the public as well as the schooner Diligence, a full-size, climbable model. Schooners like these played a vital role in the development of the early Navy by defending American merchant ships from attacks by Britain, France and the Barbary pirates.

Access to our National Historic Landmark ships, cruiser Olympia and submarine Becuna, is also included with admission. Cruiser Olympia, launched in 1892, is the oldest steel warship afloat in the world and is known for her role in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War as well as in transporting the American Unknown Soldier of World War I from France to the United States. Submarine Becuna, launched in 1944, patrolled the Pacific Ocean during World War II as well as the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the Korean War and Vietnam War respectively.

If you are visiting during the summer, don’t miss the opportunity to get out on the water at Paddle Penn’s Landing. A seasonal favorite, the program lets visitors paddle, row and kayak around our basin to get up close and personal with the river.
